Marker efficiency calculator.
How much of the marker your pieces actually use, and how much goes in the bin. Free, nothing to sign up for.
The formula
Marker efficiency = total area of the pattern pieces ÷ (marker length × marker width) × 100.
Waste is what is left over: 100 minus the efficiency. Use the same units for everything, square inches with inches or square centimetres with centimetres.
A worked example
A marker 313 inches long and 58 inches wide has an area of 18,154 square inches. If the pieces add up to 15,070 square inches, the efficiency is 15,070 ÷ 18,154 = 83.0%, and 17% is waste.
What counts as good
Above 85% is generally considered strong for woven garments. Small markers with one or two sizes usually come in lower than markers that nest a full size run, because big pieces leave gaps that small pieces can fill.
Getting the piece area
The hard input is the total piece area. AMI reads it straight from the graded pattern and reports efficiency with every marker it lays. See what comes back.
